Insurance 101 – Limits
Liability Only Coverage
- Bodily Injury – This covers the person if an at-fault accident occurs. Limits in the state of NC can be as low as 30/60. but what does that mean. The $30,000 is the amount of coverage per person. The $60,000 is the amount of coverage per accident. So if you choose the minimum and 5 people were injured once the $60,000 per accident was reached you would be paying out of pocket. If one person was injured it would cover up to $30,000 and after that amount was reached you would be responsible for the remaining amount.
- Physical Damage – This covers the other persons vehicle if in an at-fault accident. The NC state limit is $25,000. If you were involved in an accident with a Lexus and it was considered totaled. The minimum would most likely not cover the cost to replace the vehicle.
You do have other options than the state minimums and in many cases its only a few more $$ per month. Explore your options and make sure you aren’t short changing yourself by saving pennies per day. If a bad situation did occur knowing you are covered can often make it easier.
This includes Liability coverage listed above if you are in an at-fault accident and also covers your vehicle. This coverage is optional in the state of NC, unless you are financing or lease your vehicle. In those situations most lenders require a person to carry full coverage insurance on their vehicle.
Comprehensive – Comprehensive auto insurance covers damage caused by things related to the vehicle other than a car accident, including theft, fire , vandalism, weather , falling objects and animal damage. You will choose comprehensive coverage based on the deductible you want to pay if you were involved in an accident. Some examples would be None, $250,$500, etc. The higher the deductible the lower the rate, but the more you will have to pay out of pocket should something happen.
Collision- Collision covers your vehicle if you should do something like crash into another vehicle, ram in to a street pole or some other stationary object. This coverage is also determined by the deductible you want to pay.
